I recommend instead another, much older Japanese samurai drama - Abarenbo Shogun. Though much of the stories are loosely based on historical events, some are retelling real instances that had enormous importance over the future of Japan. Moreover, the show is shielded from boredom-inducing modern sensitivities and delusional Hollywood standards. There isn't excessive, needless gore since it was made for younger audiences to enjoy together with their parents, therefore great for family movie evenings. Moreover, it offers a much better and accurate historical angle for viewers to enjoy.
