Mikey Walsh is a character in which I think many of us can identify. We all have faced down that age of not believing, realizing that we are indeed growing up, and that nothing will be the same.
As an adolescent, on the cusp of his teenage years, he's at a hard place in life already, facing a lot of changes. And if that isn't enough, his family is facing a move that none of them want to make, a change that would take him away from all his fellow Goonies. Something of which none of them wish to see.
So, resigned to the fact they may never see each other again, he decides that now is the time for one last hurrah, their last chance at an adventure together. And his last chance to finish what One-Eyed Willie started. A test of strength and wit. A hero's journey that he so desperately needs.
In a way, it serves as a crossroads. Mikey knows that the adventure's end means the end of an era for him. And whether or not they make the move, he still worries whether he can handle the next step.
But their adventure does more than just save their house. It tests Mikey in the best of ways, letting him know that, in the end, he is indeed strong enough and ready to take those next steps. A right of passage that will be invaluable to him for the rest of his life.
And his fellow Goonies? If they weren't bonded together already, it made that bond even stronger, a brotherhood they will forever treasure.
